Why Facebook bought WhatsApp

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg explains why his company has paid $19bn for mesaging service WhatsApp. Here is the statement he released:
I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook.

Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. We do this by building services that help people share any type of content with any group of people they want. WhatsApp will help us do this by continuing to develop a service that people around the world love to use every day.

WhatsApp is a simple, fast and reliable mobile messaging service that is used by over 450m people on every major mobile platform. More than 1m people sign up for WhatsApp every day and it is on its way to connecting 1bn people. More and more people rely on WhatsApp to communicate with all of their contacts every day.

WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook. The product roadmap will remain unchanged and the team is going to stay in Mountain View. Over the next few years, we're going to work hard to help WhatsApp grow and connect the whole world. We also expect that WhatsApp will add to our efforts forInternet.org, our partnership to make basic internet services affordable for everyone.

WhatsApp will complement our existing chat and messaging services to provide new tools for our community. Facebook Messenger is widely used for chatting with your Facebook friends, and WhatsApp for communicating with all of your contacts and small groups of people. Since WhatsApp and Messenger serve such different and important uses, we will continue investing in both and making them each great products for everyone.

WhatsApp had every option in the world, so I'm thrilled that they chose to work with us. I'm looking forward to what Facebook and WhatsApp can do together, and to developing great new mobile services that give people even more options for connecting.

I'm particularly happy that Jan has agreed to join the Facebook board and partner with me to shape Facebook's future as well as WhatsApp's.

Jan and the WhatsApp team have done some amazing work to connect almost half a billion people. I can't wait for them to join Facebook and help us connect the rest of the world.

Facebook looks to buy solar drone company: Reports

Facebook is in talks to buy Titan Aerospace, a maker of solar-powered drones, to step up its efforts to provide Internet access to remote parts of the world, according to reports from technology blog Techcrunch and financial news outlet CNBC.
Both websites cited anonymous sources who are familiar with the deal and put a purchase price at $60 million.

Facebook spokesman Tucker Bounds said on Tuesday that the company does not comment on rumors and speculation. Titan Aerospace representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

If Facebook does buy Titan Aerospace, the purchase could fit with the goals of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Internet.org project. The Facebook-led partnership, which includes Qualcomm Inc., Samsung and Nokia, was launched last summer and aims to connect the more than 5 billion of the world's 7 billion people who are not already online. Presumably, Internet.org could use Titan's solar-powered atmospheric satellites to serve as airborne wireless access points.

Google Inc., which is not a part of the Internet.org effort, launched a similar undertaking earlier this year with the goal of getting everyone on Earth online. Called Project Loon, the effort launched Internet-beaming antennas aloft on giant helium balloons.

Titan's drone-like atmospheric satellites, which are still in development and not yet commercially available, can stay in the air for as long as five years, according to reports. Titan's website cites a wide range of uses for the drones, including atmospheric and weather monitoring, disaster response and voice and data communications. The last two could be reasons for Facebook's interest in Titan.

But Zuckerberg said last week at the Mobile World Congress wireless show that access connectivity is not the main obstacle to getting the world online. He said more than 80 percent of the world's population live in areas with 2G or 3G wireless access. More important, he said, is giving people a reason to connect: basic financial services, access to health care information and educational materials.

Facebook's acquisition of a company called Onavo last fall also fits with Internet.org's vision. Onavo develops data compression technology, which helps applications run more efficiently. This is especially important in developing countries, where people have access to much slower Internet speeds

Flipkart sales run rate hits USD 1 bn, a year ahead of its target

Flipkart sales run rate hits USD 1 bn, a year ahead of its target

Increasing Internet penetration and youngsters shopping online has helped homegrown e-commerce major Flipkart hit an annualised sales run rate of USD one billion (over Rs.6,100 crore) -- a year ahead of its
target.
The company was aiming to reach the billion dollar-mark (for gross merchandize value or GMV) by 2015.

"In March 2011, we announced that by 2015, we wanted to hit USD 1 billion in GMV. At that point in time, our run rate was USD 10 million. Today, we are really proud and excited to announce that we have hit a run rate of USD 1 billion GMV one year before our target," Flipkart co-founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in a statement.

Flipkart had started as an online bookstore and now sells products across categories like fashion and electronics.

It is also beginning to enter areas like white goods and furniture.

It also operates under the marketplace model under which it allows retailers to offer their products on their platform.

The company had also raised USD 360 million from private equity funds last year, one of the largest deals in the e-commerce space.

Since its inception, the Bangalore-based firm has raised USD 540 million from investors including Naspers, Tiger Global, Accel Partners, Dragoneer, Morgan Stanley, Sofina and Vulcan Capital.

"We have grown 100X in the last three years and it reinforces our position as the leader in the Indian e-commerce industry," the statement said.

Research firm Forrester estimates India's e-commerce market to touch USD 8.8 billion in 2016. This will be driven by increasing Internet userbase and more people shopping online.

Estimates suggest that India has over 200 million Internet users, of which some 20 million transact online.

Taller men are smarter too!

Taller men are smarter too!

The fact is that women fall for men who are taller. Now, they have an extra reason to go for them as researchers have discovered a significant correlation in the DNA between tall people and intelligence.

"We tested whether DNA-based genetic similarities among people related to their similarities in height and intelligence. What we found was a small association between height and intelligence, such that people who are taller tend to be smarter," study author Riccardo Marioni was quoted as saying in Sunday Times.

Read Story: French and Italian men are the biggest love-cheats

The study was the first to analyse the DNA markers for height in people who are not related.
Data was collected from more than 6,800 unrelated people.

Both height and high IQ are also linked with better health, the researchers pointed out.

The data could be used to predict other health outcomes, said the study published in the journal Behavior Genetics.

However, if you are not tall, then no worries -- researchers attributed about 70 percent of short people's IQs to genetic factors.

Malaysian jet missing: China deploys ten satellites to help in search for the airliner

Malaysian jet missing: China deploys ten satellites to help in search for the airliner

China has deployed 10 satellites to help in the massive air and sea search for a missing Malaysian airliner, the People's Liberation Army Daily said on Tuesday.

The satellites will use high-resolution earth imaging capabilities, visible light imaging and other technologies to "support and assist in the search and rescue operations for the Malaysian Airlines aircraft", the newspaper said in an article that was also carried on the defence ministry's website.

Dozens of ships and aircraft from 10 countries scoured the seas around Malaysia and south of Vietnam as questions mounted over possible security lapses and whether a bomb or hijacking attempt could have brought down the Boeing 777-200ER which took off from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
China has urged Malaysia to speed up the search for the plane. About two-thirds of the 227 passengers and 12 crew now presumed to have died aboard the plane were Chinese.

The Chinese satellites will also help in weather monitoring, communication and search operations in the area where the plane disappeared, the newspaper said.

China will also strengthen the Beidou navigation system's satellite monitoring capabilities to "provide reliable navigation for the rescue operations and communication support".

Ten nations search for missing Malaysia jet

The disappearance of a Malaysian airliner about an hour into a flight to Beijing is an "unprecedented mystery", the civil aviation chief said on Monday, as a massive air and sea search now in its third day failed to find any trace of the plane or 239 people on board.{mosimage}

The area of the search would be widened from Tuesday, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia's Civil Aviation Authority, told reporters.

A senior police official told Reuters that people armed with explosives and carrying false identity papers had tried to fly out of Kuala Lumpur in the past, and that current investigations were focused on two passengers who were on the missing plane with stolen passports.

"We have stopped men with false or stolen passports and carrying explosives, who have tried to get past KLIA (airport) security and get on to a plane," he said. "There have been two or three incidents, but I will not divulge the details."{mosimage}

Interpol confirmed on Sunday at least two passengers used stolen passports and said it was checking whether others aboard had used false identity documents.

Azharuddin said a hijacking attempt could not be ruled out as investigators explore all theories for the loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

"Unfortunately we have not found anything that appears to be objects from the aircraft, let alone the aircraft," he told a news conference.

"As far as we are concerned, we have to find the aircraft. We have to find a piece of the aircraft if possible."

Azharuddin also said the two men with stolen passports did not look like Asians, but he did not elaborate. Airport CCTV footage showed they completed all security procedures, he said.

"We are looking at the possibility of a stolen passport syndicate," he said.

A senior source involved in preliminary investigations in Malaysia said the failure to find any debris indicated the plane may have broken up mid-flight, which could disperse wreckage over a very wide area.

"The fact that we are unable to find any debris so far appears to indicate that the aircraft is likely to have disintegrated at around 35,000 feet," said the source.

Asked about the possibility of an explosion, the source said there was no evidence of foul play and that the aircraft could have broken up due to mechanical causes.

Still, the source said the closest parallels were the bomb explosions on board an Air India jetliner in 1985 when it was over the Atlantic Ocean and a Pan Am aircraft over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988. Both planes were cruising at around 31,000 feet at the time.{mosimage}

The United States extensively reviewed imagery taken by American spy satellites for evidence of a mid-air explosion, but saw none, a U.S. government source said. The source described U.S. satellite coverage of the region as thorough.

Moss-covered cable reel

Hopes for a breakthrough rose briefly when Vietnam scrambled helicopters to investigate a floating yellow object it was thought could have been a life raft. But the country's Civil Aviation Authority said on its website that the object turned out to be a "moss-covered cap of a cable reel".

Flight MH370 disappeared from radar screens in the early hours of Saturday, about an hour into its flight from Kuala Lumpur, after climbing to a cruising altitude of 35,000 ft (10,670 metres).

Underlining the lack of hard information about the plane's fate, a U.S. Navy P-3 aircraft capable of covering 1,500 sq miles every hour was sweeping the northern part of the Strait of Malacca, on the other side of the Malaysian peninsula from where the last contact with MH370 was made.

No distress signal was sent from the lost plane, which experts said suggested a sudden catastrophic failure or explosion, but Malaysia's air force chief said radar tracking showed it may have turned back from its scheduled route before it disappeared.

The Boeing 777 has one of the best safety records of any commercial aircraft in service. Its only previous fatal crash came on July 6 last year when Asiana Airlines Flight 214 struck a seawall on landing in San Francisco, killing three people.

Massive search

About two-thirds of the 227 passengers and 12 crew now presumed to have died aboard the plane were Chinese. The airline said other nationalities included 38 Malaysians, seven Indonesians, six Australians, five Indians, four French and three Americans.

The passenger manifest issued by the airline included the names of two Europeans - Austrian Christian Kozel and Italian Luigi Maraldi - who were not on the plane. Their passports had been stolen in Thailand during the past two years.

An Interpol spokeswoman said a check of all documents used to board the plane had revealed more "suspect passports", which were being investigated.

"Whilst it is too soon to speculate about any connection between these stolen passports and the missing plane, it is clearly of great concern that any passenger was able to board an international flight using a stolen passport listed in Interpol's databases," Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said.

A European diplomat in Kuala Lumpur cautioned that the Malaysian capital was an Asian hub for illegal migrants, many of whom used false documents and complex routes including via Beijing or West Africa to reach a final destination in Europe.

"You shouldn't automatically think that the fact there were two people on the plane with false passports had anything to do with the disappearance of the plane," the diplomat said.

"The more you know about the role of Kuala Lumpur in this chain, the more doubtful you are of the chances of a linkage."

A Thai travel agent who arranged the tickets for the two passengers using the stolen passports said she had booked them on the flight via Beijing because they were the cheapest tickets, the Financial Times reported.{mosimage}

The travel agent in the resort of Pattaya said an Iranian business contact she knew only as "Mr Ali" had asked her to book tickets for the two men on March 1.

She had initially booked them on other airlines but those reservations expired and on March 6, Mr Ali had asked her to book them again. She told the newspaper she did not think Mr Ali, who paid her in cash and booked tickets with her regularly, was linked to terrorism.

Nokia X: Five reasons why it is not just another Android

 Nokia X

The newly unveiled Nokia X series of Android phones may have taken the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2014 by storm and at the same time stolen the limelight from Samsung's Galaxy S5, but the fact remains that the Nokia phone is not a typical Android phone.

The low-cost Nokia X series, powered by the Google-owned Android OS, is the first ever Android phone from Nokia's stables. Apart from the fact that this is Nokia's first foray into the Android market, what has got the MWC talking about the Nokia X series are the prices - Nokia X for 89 euros, Nokia X+ at 99 euros and XL for 89 euros.
Though presented and launched as an Android phone, here are five reasons why it is different from your usual Android phones available in the market.

1.  A trimmed Android 4.1 Jelly Bean: The Nokia X series runs on a trimmed version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean without the stock Google services as seen in other Android powered phones.

The users can, however, sideload Google apps via APK files.

2. No Google App Store: Stock Google android applications such as Gmail, Chrome, Google Maps etc have been replaced by Outlook and Microsoft Exchange, Nokia Express browser and Here Maps.

3. Windows Phone-like UI: Though it is Nokia's first Android phone series, Nokia has stuck to its Windows phone-like UI combined with Asha Fastlane.

4. Back button: The X-series smartphones come with a back button from the Asha full-touch phones instead of having the typical three button layout as seen in traditional Android phones.

5. New app store: Nokia is developing its own app store to provide applications for Nokia's own Android platform.

The Nokia X series smartphones are not an alternative to the pure Android phones. The X series bring a mix of Android, Windows Phone, and Nokia's own Asha OS experience.

Nokia's X+, 5-inch XL Android phones to be available in India by May

Nokia's X+, 5-inch XL Android phones to be available in India by May

New Delhi: Finnish handset giant Nokia today launched its much awaited Android-based smartphone 'X' in India for Rs 8,599, aimed at protecting its turf in the fiercely competitive market.
The company had announced 'Nokia X' family of affordable smartphones, which runs Google's Android apps, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month.
The company had said then that Nokia X+ is expected to be priced at euro 99 (about Rs 8,400), Nokia XL at euro 109 (about Rs 9,200) and Nokia X at euro 89 (about Rs 7,500).While Nokia X users will not have access to Google's app market 'Google Play', they can sideload Android apps from third party app stores as well as Microsoft app store.

Nokia said it will bring the other two devices - X+ and XL - in the Indian market in the next 60 days.
"India is one of the fastest growing markets for smart phones in the world. With the launch of Nokia X, we are adding more ammunition to our smartphone portfolio. We believe Nokia X is a unique combination of Nokia quality and experiences, Microsoft services and Android apps," Nokia India Managing Director P Balaji told PTI.

India is the third largest market for smartphones. IDC data showed that smartphone sales in the country surpassed 44 million units in 2013, up from 16.2 million in 2012.The surge has been mainly powered by home grown vendors like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava, which offer smartphones for as low as Rs 3,000.Also, IDC attributed the migration of users from feature phones to smartphones primarily due to the narrowing price gaps between these product categories.Asked if the handset will eat into the business of its Asha range of affordable smartphones, Balaji answered in the negative.

"Asha, Nokia X and the Lumia range are three separate offerings. While the pricing of each of these will come down with time, they have their own set of features that offers value to a particular set of people," he added.
Terming the Nokia X as a "feeder" for its Lumia range of premium smartphones, Balaji said the device will help users experience Microsoft services like Skype and Outlook before they actually opt for the Lumia devices.

Currently, Lumia 520 is the cheapest handset in the Lumia series. It is available for about Rs 9,999 (dealer price) and Rs 7,600 (eCommerce sites).
The dual SIM Nokia X is a 4-inch device, powered by a 1 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It features a tile-based design, 512MB RAM (up to 32GB expandable memory), 3MP camera and 1500 mAH battery.

The Nokia X is based on the Android open platform.

While Nokia X users will not have access to Google's app market 'Google Play', they can sideload Android apps from third party app stores as well as Microsoft app store.

Nokia X’s operating system has been built on Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This is just a fraction of Google’s OS seen in many of today’s phones. AOSP doesn’t come with proprietary Google code and hence, Google apps such as Play Store, Google Maps, etc, will not be available on Nokia X. Over the years, Google has been linking several key features to Google Play Services, which isn’t available under AOSP. If an app makes use of any of these features, Nokia X won’t be able to run it.
For further information on the limitations of AOSP, you can read two articles on the subject at Ars Technica. One is about Google’s iron grip on Android and the other explains why forking Android is not the best idea.

DISTINCT MICROSOFT FLAVOUR

Nokia X comes with a customised tile-based interface that reminds of Windows Phone. Couple that with Microsoft services such as OneDrive, Outlook and Nokia’s own Here Maps, and it’s easy to mistake this phone for a Windows Phone device.
Nokia said it is working on an easy way to migrate your data from the Nokia X to Lumia phones. More details on that should be available in the coming weeks.

FAST LANE

Nokia X just has one button below its touchscreen display. This is a back button that looks identical to the one on new Asha series phones. It’s not surprising that Nokia also brought the Fast Lane interface from Asha to the X. Fast Lane gives you quick access to your favourite actions, whether it is playing music or calling. It also keeps you updated on upcoming events from your calendar.

FIXED FOCUS

The Nokia X’s camera does not have auto-focus, which is a bit baffling considering the phone’s price. The Lumia 520 costs less than the X and comes with auto-focus. If you love photography, then the Nokia X’s camera is going to prove a little restrictive.

THE APP MARKET

The biggest concern, however, is availability of apps. Nokia ships the phone with apps such as Facebook and Opera,
